What is deep house music?

Deep house music is a subgenre of house music that emerged in the late 1980s in the United States, particularly in Chicago. The term "deep" refers to the genre's signature deep, soulful and sometimes melancholic sound, characterized by a slower tempo and the use of deep basslines and complex chords.

Deep house music often incorporates elements of jazz, funk and soul music, as well as African and Latin percussion instruments. It is known for its smooth and hypnotic rhythms, and is often associated with a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere.

In the 1990s, deep house music gained popularity in the UK, and many DJs and producers began experimenting with new sounds and styles. Today, it remains a popular genre, with many clubs and festivals dedicated to showcasing deep house music.

Some popular deep house artists include Larry Heard, Frankie Knuckles, Kerri Chandler, Black Coffee, and Maya Jane Coles.
